General Election and Employment: The Green Party Employment and Business Manifesto

The publication of political manifestos continues, and the third party to do so are the Green Party.  So, what do we know about what the employment landscape would look like under a government led by the Green Party? Here are the key pledges:

Making work fair:

The Green Party have set out their commitment to making work fair, which includes:

  1. Introducing a Charter of Worker’s Rights, with the right to strike and a legal obligation for all employers to recognise trade unions
  2. A maximum of 10:1 pay rations for all private and public sector organisations
  3. A rise of the National Minimum Wage to £15 per hour and the removal of the age bandings and the inclusion of those on zero-hour contracts and working in the ‘gig economy’.
  4. Employment rights for all workers from day 1 of employment
  5. ‘Gig employers’ that repeatedly break employment, data protection or tax law will be denied licences to operate.
  6. A four-day working week.
