Labour’s Employment Law Plans: Only 38% of employers have started planning for the upcoming changes

In our recent webinar, now available on demand, we discussed the employment landscape post the General Election, including the new Employment Rights Bill and its significant implications for employers.  We also explored Labour’s employment law plans for this parliamentary year and the 5-year term in Government. It’s clear that the promised changes have the potential to lead to the biggest shake-up in employment law in years – probably decades.

Understanding these upcoming changes is crucial for employers to prepare effectively. Our webinar revealed that 86% of participants were aware, to varying extents, of the government’s plans, though only 38% had actually started planning for the changes.

Managing changes in employment law, particularly in light of Labour’s employment law plan, is complex. There needs to be a deep understanding of existing working practices, policies, and workplace culture. Employers must assess the impact of these changes on existing budgets and forecast how they may affect the business. Thorough reviews of core employment documentation such as the contract of employment, employee handbook and policies will be critical. Once these documents are updated to comply with the latest developments, training your workforce at all levels will be fundamental.

Our webinar revealed many employers feel they will need help managing the new employment developments:

  • 83% need assistance with core employment documentation, including contracts, handbooks, and policies
  • 68% would require an audit of existing practices
  • 57% feel they need support in training their workforce
  • 17% want help reviewing existing trade union relations
  • 22% would like support and guidance in forecasting and scenario planning to prepare for the changes.

We have also written a Hot Topic article about the proposed Labour changes and provide the latest updates on other areas of employment law due to come into force shortly, introduced under the previous Government. In our Hot Topic, we provide further guidance and recommendations for how employers can prepare for the changes ahead.
